Prime areas of learning
The three prime areas provide the foundations for children’s future learning and development.
Communication and Language
We create a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to listen, understand, communicate and express their thoughts and ideas. Stories, songs, conversations and imaginative play help children develop their vocabulary and confidence as communicators.
Physical Development
Children have regular opportunities to be active and develop their balance, movement, coordination and fine-motor skills. We also support children to become increasingly independent in their personal care and to understand the importance of healthy choices.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Through secure relationships and sensitive support, we help children develop confidence, recognise and manage their emotions and build positive relationships with others. Children learn to cooperate, make choices, develop independence and understand how their actions can affect other people.
Specific areas of learning
The four specific areas help children strengthen and apply the skills developed through the prime areas.
Literacy
We nurture an enjoyment of books, stories, rhymes and songs. Children are encouraged to notice sounds, explore letters and words and develop their early reading and writing skills through conversation, storytelling, mark-making and meaningful play.
Mathematics
Children develop their understanding of numbers, patterns, shape, space and measures through everyday experiences and practical activities. We encourage children to count, compare, investigate and solve problems in ways that are relevant and enjoyable.
Understanding the World
We give children opportunities to explore their surroundings, investigate how things work and learn about their community and the wider world. Children are encouraged to notice similarities and differences, talk about their families and experiences and develop respect for people, cultures and the natural environment.
Expressive Arts and Design
Children can explore and express their ideas through art, music, movement, dance, imaginative play and construction. By experimenting with different materials, sounds and creative experiences, children develop their imagination, confidence and individual forms of expression.
Our practitioners observe and support children as they play, using their professional knowledge to identify each child’s interests, achievements and next steps. We work closely with families to ensure every child is understood, appropriately challenged and given the individual support they need to flourish.
